First of all, hello everyone :) this is my first post so tell me if I'm doing it wrong :P

I currently own a z740, which I've had for about three months now, and next month I will be going on safari in Kenya. I would really like an SLR for this but I cannot afford it so I will have to stick to my z740 - but I have about £100 for a teleconverter and filters, etc.

Reading through some old posts, I can see that and are my main options. I am a bit concerned about the fitting of filters to these two lenses though. My other option (considering I want as high a multiplier as I can get) is (nb. you can fit 67mm filters to the front thread) but I am concerned about the quality of the product. Another question about the 3.2x teleconverter is can I add another teleconverter to the front 67mm thread?

Any help from anyone would be greatly recieved :)

I would stay away from the Opteka. I made the mistake of buying one, then ended up purchasing the Kodak telephoto lense the next day.

I don't know if you want to hear this. The z740 has a 380 mm equiv lens. That's pretty strong telephoto, especially if you are hand-holding the camera. I wouldn't be afraid to use the digital zoom a little for cropping in real time. The results are pretty good.

The Kodak lens is not the best in the world at the long focal lengths. Focus tends to be a bit soft. Using an telephoto extension is going to make that worse.

What final focal length are you shooting for? The 380 mm is close to the maximum telephoto for hand held cameras. Such a lens would cost hundreds on an SLR.

Josh,

Both the Kodak and the Oly should give you 500mm (Kodak 605 & Oly 734). I think the Oly link you posted earlier is not the one for the right lens. The one I have on my wish list is for a manufacturer's number 200862 (got that number from previous posts here) and the specifications are different. Here are the specs:

As far as the tripod is concerned you might want to look into a monopod instead of or in addition to a tripod. I love mine for those occasions when you don't have much time to set up a shot. They are also less cumbersome to carry.

Sorry- my post is not clear enough. I mean to say is stay away from opteka. I got Tele and W con lenses, Tele lense is useless while Wide angle is OK but barrel distortion is higher than average.
