Okay, I went to Circuit City to BUY the D70s (yes, I was finally going to buy it) and they guy starts asking why not a Canon... don't I like the Canon's... etc. I said really I don't. I've done a ton of research and the D70s is the one for me.

He then starts spouting some stuff about how the Nikon has some sort of different sensor and it has to be cleaned EVERY year and it's going to cost almost $300 each year just to get it cleaned. He then starts touting the Canon 30D and how great it is and how I should really be looking at that.

Come to find out he doesn't HAVE the d70s in stock. He's got plenty of Canons (hmmmm... ya think???) so I should go with that one (oh... for $400 more as well).

WTF is that all about????

Please tell me this isn't true!

I was SOOOOOO close!!!! If I hear it's okay I may go to a different CC and see if they have it but now I'm completely terrified!!!!

Canon and Nikon DO use different types of sensors in their DLSRs. Nikon uses (with two exceptions) CCD sensors, while canon use CMOS sensors on their current cameras.

This is a matter of sensor technology, ie how the electronics inside the sensor work. For the user they are more or less exactly the same, especially regarding cleaning.

It sounds like he has no Nikon d70s in stock but wants to make a sale. Sensors in all digital cameras may require cleaning occassionally but not daily. I f you really want the Nikon d70s stick to your guns and look else where. It's a great camera you will be happy with......Goog Luck

i would not go back to that CC, i compared the D70s, D50 and Canon 30D, before I bought my D50, yes its not a 70s, however i did do my homework. while it does help to clean the sensor every 6-12 months depending on use, my local nikon authroized shop will do it for about $60 same for any DSLR. if your set on a D70s dont let anyone stop you, he was just trying to make a sale...oh, there is a reason they are out of em....they are great cameras

I mean that sounds a bit high on maintenence doesn't it? Will I have to have it cleaned every year?

You're right that he was definitely trying to sell a camera but this was something I wasn't thinking about. gasp

Yes! That guy should be just trying to sell a camera he does have in stock. The only time I cleaned my 18 mont old D70 it costed me €25. I live in Portugal but around here anything that has to do with photography just (usually) costs more than anywhere else in the world.
Will I have to have it cleaned every year?
I really doubt that. As I mentioned before I've only cleaned my 18 month old D70. Moreover, not only Nikon's but all dSLRs suffer from the same dust-in-the-sensor issue. Only Olympus have their dSLRs equiped with a dust-free solution

He's talking rubbish - don't give him your business. This is a problem with all DSLRs, and I'm surprised you're only finding out about it now. Do a search for sensor cleaning on this forum (and the Canon forum for that matter), and you'll learn lots about it. There are various ways to clean a sensor, and it's not expensive. Also, it doesn't need to be cleaned yearly... it needs to be cleaned when its got dust on it!
