If you want to make absolutely sure before the shot that you get
the exposure right spot meter off the highlights, shadow and the
most important areas and set exposure manually to stay within the
about 9 stop usable dynamic range of the D200 and/or to achieve the
exposure you want. Thats the method I used shooting slides (the
dynamic range was only about 5 stops).

This seems like an interesting technique. Suppose you measure and calculate the difference between shadow and highlight, and suppose the difference is 9 stops do you manually expose then for the middle ?
