My own test shots...

Like you, I set my Canon EF 24-105 F4L IS box exactly 8 feet away from the front of the lens on my EOS-20D. The box was lit by a halogen desk lamp. Both the box and the camera were in fixed positions (resting on a desk). I used ISO400, Center-Point AF, AWB, and the timer on all shots. The Tamron 28-75 was tested at 55mm at F2.8, F4.0, F5.6, F8.0, and F11.0. The Canon 24-105 was tested at 55mm at F4.0, F5.6, F8.0, and F11.0 with IS enabled on all shots.

Here are my results:

(All images are 100% crops with NO additional work in PS!)

Looking at my results, I would say my 24-105 is a tad sharper, but I could be bias!
