Who is an expert?

Lens designers or professional lens users?

Canon does design purely protective front elements into their super telephoto lenses. They make these elements "meniscus" lenses that do nothing optically but are slightly curved because Canon says that flat lenses increase flare and internal reflections (they show two examples of this in their book "Lens Work III." So those lens designers have "voted for" protection as long as it's factored into the design of the lens, and who have "voted against" flat filters.

You won't find many professionals who use filters in benign environments for the reasons that have been stated here by by people who don't use filters in benign environments.
