No, you must choose one or the other.

There is good reason for it to work this way: if you are using the command dial on the camera, the lens must be set at minimum aperture, or it won't work. If you could work it both ways, people would end up getting confused when the lens was accidentally moved from minimum aperture and things started not working quite right. Having the camera just say ERR and refuse to do anything gives a clear indication that Something Is Wrong, rather than someone just wondering why all their pictures were at f/16 for no good reason.

I greatly prefer the aperture ring, myself, and strongly wish the stupid "G" lenses didn't exist.
