I was going to cancel my order w/ Dell because I could get the F707 at Sears for 10% less, but I heard all the stories of waiting on the line at Dell's CS. Now I get an e-mail that says if I don't give consent of keeping the order, they'll cancel it. I'm fine with that!

I got the same e-mail which is fine with me. I've spent enough time waiting on the phone with them. Although I have to add that I just received the 2 128meg memory sticks that I ordered with my 707.

I have had a very positive experience with Dell, in contrast with you guys. I have had to wait on the phone, a couple of times, for over five minutes, but most of the time my sales rep answers within a few rings! And I have really jerked them around, trying to get the best deal! I started out ordering from the Small Business site, but then I realized I would have to pay tax. The very next day, the Home and Home Office site ran the same special, but without the tax--$801.95 including shipping for the 707. Dell helped me cancel my signup and order in the Small Business section and facilitated getting me registered on the Home and Home Office site. Even at Sears, where they would not honor the price match for me, locally, anyway, I could not do a whole lot better. But the main thing is they really have been courteous and cooperative with me, and I will continue to buy from them, just based on that one aspect of the interaction.

Second, I just checked with my sales rep, Clif, at ext. 60276. He had not heard about any emails threatening to cancel. He said that usually those emails are sent as a secondary confirmation to help fraud control, not to cancel because an item is being further backordered.

Moreover, he was very familiar with DPReview, and said he had been contacted by several of his customers, this morning, Monday, saying that they had been apprised that many, if not most, outstanding 707 orders are supposed to go out by Wednesday, November 7. So, I am hanging in there and best of luck to the rest of you with Sears. They were completely rude to me, long waits in line, no way they would honor any price match other than the very short list on their website.

And to think, I would have even gotten a Sears credit card, if they had only "cared."

I ordered a 707 through Dell on 10/17 and have been patiently waiting even though I've been tempted to cancel and go the Sears route.

I called Dell on Friday and spoke with a outstanding CSR named Gary Brown (ext 40773, eml [email protected]) who was aware of the delay due to Sony's upgrade. While he didn't speculate on a date such as Nov 7th, he was extremely personable and friendly (even BS'd with me for 10 minutes on why Dell won't use AMD's new chip and when they'll start using DDR SDRAM on Dell PCs). When I asked to be emailed a quote with the price of the 707 he did within minutes. I then called my local Sears who said they can't even order the camera now until Sony corrects the problem on their end. He did say he'd give me EITHER 10% off or the price match but not both. No big break there, especially since they don't have them either.

My middle name is impatient but I do believe I'll wait for Dell - I've ordered from them in the past and have never had a problem... knock on wood.

p.s. Has anyone with a order still through Dell thought about an extended warranty? Is there a way to purchase a warranty through a different retailer even if you buy through Dell??

I'm not sure I understand why everyone is whining about Dell. Since the recall of the 707 you can't buy one anywhere right now. So, if you cancel your order with Dell and go to Sears you still won't be able to get the camera until Sony ships them. If you are able to get 10% lower than the Dell price then that is indeed a good price and you might as well wait for Sears to deliver as Dell. It just so happened that the Dell sale on 10/17 and the BFS recall all kinda happened around the same time. Product that Dell thought would be shipped around the end of Oct or 1st of November is obviously product that is being held by Sony until they have have the problem corrected on all their stock. The problem with Dell seems to be that their customer support staff aren't all on the same page with regard to this particular item. It does appear that the camera is no longer offered by Dell. I've called twice and got totally different explanations each time. One rep said the camera would ship in about a week (which closely matches the estimated dates I have seen posted here). The other rep said the item was discontinued and would never ship.

I have had my order since 10/17, but have not received any email after the initial confirmation. While I think Dell has been very sloppy handling the F707 orders, I cannot hold them responsible for Sony's problems. I think I got a great price and I will continue to do business with them.

When I talked to Clif at Dell today, he gave me some hope that I might have a camera within a week. I won't hold my breath, but I am willing to wait a while longer.

My Dell rep said he'd inquire by email as to current status and get back in a couple of hours. It's 10 hours later and no response. It does seem that Dell is not sending out advisories on the situation so that all the reps are up to speed and have a consistent story; or maybe there's just disarray in the management ranks and there IS no consistent policy.

Come on, Dell, tell your people what the latest truth is, so they can tell us.

By the way, Dell is legally contracted to deliver cameras at the agreed upon price. They can't unilaterally discontinue without honoring an order. Not that I think they're likely to.

I am also waiting for my 707 from Dell. I have always received good service and about a week or so ago I got a real phone call from Dell saying the camera was delayed until 11/7/01. Even though the web said it would ship on the first.

My daughter took the call, she thinks they said the 7th. or 11th or the 17th something like that Dad. I'll bet if it was Best Buys letting her know when the next Incubus CD came out she would remember.

Ill give Dell a couple more weeks.

I know if you take the 'unopened' box to Best Buy you can pickup their warranty. Don't know how good it is and I'm sure it's not as good as Sears.

I think we should all go on vacation for a week, and return in hopes
of spotting the package from Dell at the doorstep.
Must get the brain off the waiting game. I hear a song there.....

Randall, next time try applying the correct name to a quote when replying - I didn't say what you have me quoted as saying.

BTW, I'd say $1000 is a good reason to "whine"...
