17 - 35 at 2.8

My third copy of and second (new) 17 - 35 arrived today.

First one: (ebay) soft on one side, second one (new) squeaked when focusing and this one (new) soft (blue spreading) @ 2.8 keeps improving when stopped down. Until it is fantastic at 5.6. Not great wide open though.

My (new) 12-24 was damaged in its first week, this turned out to be a mixed blesssing as £110.00 later it came back from Nikon as a far better lens.

The moral is: QC could be a lot better @ Nikon.

I still love my Sigma 20mm F1.8. Cheap, well built and fast. Still waiting for a 12mm F1.8 though

In answer to the original post, get the 17-35, but check it out and then send it Nikon to warranty repair.
