Re: Nikon 105mm Micro VR (good or bad)? Help

Is there something that should be learned in order to get the tack sharp images this lens is supposedly capable of?

Check the shutter speeds on your shots. The lighting sucks in most cameras stores, so I'd imagine they were long exposures. 105mm with the 1.5X crop factor is a telephoto lens, and prone to camera shake. Hand held, shutter speeds should be less than 1/150th second for best results. If you're using longer shutter speeds and relying on VR to stabilize the image, you need to hold the shutter down for about half a second before the VR mechanism will kick in. From what I understand, VR is of limited help for very close or macro shots, so if you can't get a shutter speed less than 1/150, you'll need to use a tripod. Jmho.
