Any low light 50mm f1.8 shots?

I'd like to know just how this lens reacts under low light conditions. No flash. In shooting variously lit stages, how does it perform, and just how close must one be to get good shots. My grand daughter has a dance recital coming up soon. Since my 50mm lens is my fastest lens, I was thinking that any of my other(18-55mm, 28-200mm, or 70-300mm each in the 3.5/4-5.6) lenses would simply not do. But is this the case? Is the 50mm f1.8 my only lens with any real potential for a venture like this(on my 300D)? And if that's the case would I need to probably shoot wide open at f1.8, and at ISO 400(or higher)? What shooting mode would be suggested? Aperture priority?
Thanks for your comments.
