Here is my solution:

Other companies make the same type of thing, too. I also have a less expensive plastic on which is not nearly as nice as this one. I use with both my SB-800 and/or my portable strobe system. When I am using it with my SB-800, I have the unit mounted on a shoe slave. The show slave allows the brass peace to be screwed into it and it all goes together nicely. You can also use the SC-29 fore the end in which the flash attaches has a 3/8 inch hole in the bottom for such things.
