Sigma 17-70 first day with it (imgs)

I just took delivery of the new Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 DC MACRO.

Build:

I am surprised by its very sturdy build quality, and the quasi-ex finish. The pedal hood fits firmly, no complaints there. Since it's not "ex" there is no pouch, but I didn't want one anyways. The size of it is rather small on the grand scheme of things, it seems to be just a tad longer than my 50mm 1.8 (when at 17mm). The more I think about it, it's surprisingly small. Smaller than the kit, way way smaller than the 28-135 IS. The zoom is tight and perfect... it doesn't loosen up or tighten at the long end. Absolutely no barrel creep.

AF:

Autofocus in low-light is tantamount to the kit lens (18-55); which I find very acceptable. It is just about what you'd expect. The AF outdoors is about the same speed of my 28-135 IS USM; a surprisingly good result for this non-hsm sigma. Accuracy outdoors was spot on.. any mistakes was user error (getting used to f/2.8 at 17mm). This lens outdoors does not show any obvious front/back focus. AF is very quiet, it's softer than my 50 1.8 and just a tad louder than my 28-135 IS USM. More or less the same amount of noise as the kit lens, which I find rather quiet. Before writing this sentence I played with it a little bit more in my next to dark room (no lights on except my Dell 2405fpw mega bright monitor) and found its focus to be surprisingly fast and accurate with next to no light. I'm starting to like this little guy.

first day shots:

I opened up all of these photos in cs2 ACR and tried to process them as consistently as possible. Mild USM was applied. I took a walk around my law school campus snapping away... I ruined a good portion of my 2.8 flower pics b/c the DOF was just too tiny on so many of them.. The only negative I noticed was the vignetting at 2.8 @ 17mm. Maybe this is an acceptable amount, maybe it isn't, I just know it is easily fixed in ACR. The wide open shots were very sharp, but stopped down sharpness improved some. I am very happy with the performance of this lens right now. For me, the real test will be when I get my next model in my studio.
