Formulated the best all-around Camera

I'd get a single card reader for the types of memory you own and not worry about the others. A reader with a lot of slots will add a lot of drive letters to "my computer" and just confuse you.

Check out this AA battery charger.

I don't have one, but people over here were talking about it.

I was looking at the adorama "slinger bag". It seemed like a nice small bag.

They don't have the best reputation on the net. Don't be too surprized it you find them trying to sell you the neckstrap and other items normally packed with the camera at extra cost. They may also have quoted you the price for a "grey" market camera and these are NOT warrantied by Nikon.

Here's a tip fou you. Take your best prices to Roberts and see how close they will come to matching them. I am a strong believer in buying from my local retailers even when it costs me a bit more. After all they have mouths to feed also and it's noce to keep them in business by actually shopping with them instead of just using them as a free resource. They also won't subject you to the ame type of "bait and switch" tactics that are so widespread with a lot of the net cheapy deals.

As for the tax savings, don't count on that. Legally, you are obligated to report any of these purchases and pay a sales tax on the purchase. With the economy in the state it is now, states are hurting for cash and starting to go after people not reporting interstate purchases. When it happens, it's accompanied by a real hefty fine. Right now Michigan is going after online sales of ciggarettes and in one report I saw the individual caught had over 7,000 USD in fines and taxes. Since they are in the process of subpeoning all of the vendors records the likelyhood of getting caught is high. I think that this is just the tip of the iceberg, states have caught on to the fact that they are now losing a lot of revenue to these tax cheats and I expect that they will get a lot more aggressive about collecting on unpaid taxes. When it happens, those caught may be facing the cost of the original sales tax PLUS years of penalties.

Bottomline, spend a bit more and shop at Roberts. They are a large enough outfit that I wouldn't be surprized if they come real close to matching your net prices and you'll have the option of an exchange if something doesn't meet your expectations.

Russell- Interesting site re: the memory card speeds. But in the real world, do you really see a noticable difference in write speed between say the Sandisk Ultra II and the Extreme III? Also, I didn't know the D50 compresses RAW files.

Russell_D70,

I have a Panasonic 66X card and a Sandisk 10X and I can tell you there is a big difference in write speed and it's not a bunch of crXp. What should he do, buy the slowest card available and save $10 !! Don't think so.

Go with a fast card...

I don't think anyone was saying he should buy the cheapest card. Sure, your 10X card, which is slower than a microdrive (about 13x) is going to make a difference, and it will definitely limit the fps over time. But once you get over 30X I don't think you will see any improvement. As long as the speed of the card is faster than the memory buffer, you won't see an improvement in fps. Just stick with a recent name-brand like Sandisk, Kingston or Lexar and it should work fine.

I used a microdrive for about a year, and once I realed off 3 frames it would slow down to about 1 fps until the card had time to recover - it needed about 5 seconds to empty the buffer.

Yes it will, and it can be a real pain. One helpful thing you can do in this situation, is if you are running Windows XP, go to Computer Management, then Disk Management. Right-Click on the drives you don't want to show, choose Properties, and then disable the device. Works like a charm.

It sounds like you haven't actually dealt with Beach Camera. They're totally legit. I bought my D50 body from them and got no hard sell, no "follow-up" calls, nothing. Just speedy delivery and an awesome deal. They explicitly say that all of their products come with a US warrantee, so no worries about shady grey market products.

There are bogus camera shops on the internet, but Beach is NOT one of them. Do a search in the forums -- a recent thread asking about them got tons of positive responses.

I didn't say get the slowest card....I said, don't believe the manufacturer's speed rating.

Those are two different things....read more carefully. That's why I showed the link to the rating site.

Of course card speed matters!

I don't know if you'll notice the difference in the real world between the two aforementioned cards. Please check the site. IN MY OPINION, I would get later card models with hopes that (1) they are faster (2) have less bugs and will not die. I am not a technician...just my opinion.

Great prices and they have always shipped the next day. I would rate them with B&H, although they charge 10% restocking fee on returns. Rich
