My thanks to all who participated for their great photos and for being so supportive of a newbie fumbling to host a challenge. And now, without further delay or platitudes...

The RUNNERS UP:

Michael Friedman

The Bartender (A scene so timeless that, with a few scratches, dodges and burns, it could pass for a photo of a Prohibition-era speakeasy caught on an old 4x5 camera; beautiful contrast and shadow):

SharonL

Soda Pop (Great composition with focal point, the mixed bottles, the unlabeled cases, and the red table cloth; beautiful lighting):

tominboston
Drunk (Simply elegant, what more is there to say):

Esmeralda of the Lakes

the heavy weapons fighter (with a special nod, though perhaps a tiny bit under-saturated this definitely would've been the Ancient Mariner's choice for winner)

antidote3

Liquid Gold (for catching the chill so perfectly that it took us a while to realize this is one of the new aluminum bottles):

agroni

Thursty for Water (This shot looks exactly like some of the classic 1950s black and white postcards we bought in Italy last summer):

SECOND PLACE

LScottC

self-portrait in Paris (my wife thought this was straight out of National Geographic Traveler; and who wouldn't want to be across the table from this happy guy, with Notre Dame tucked into the background):

And THE WINNER

PhotoKahn

They can make you sick... (a 300D shot so tack-sharp and perfectly balanced it should have all those 1D owners wondering why they spent the extra cash, and remind the rest of us why there's no rush to upgrade):

Again, my thanks to all, and special congratulations to the Challenge 73 winners. It was a pleasure to host and an honor to judge. PhotoKhan, I pass the torch to you.

Cheers!

They are really good shots and they had tough competition. Congratulations to all the runner's up as well!

Jared, you were an excellent host, no one would have known it was your first time if you hadn't mentioned it! Good work!

Oh, and thanks for picking my Soda Pop as a runner up. I hardly expected that with all the other wonderful shots to choose from!
I can't wait to see what PhotoKhan has in store for us next! Sharon

My heartiest congratulations to this challenge winner, PhotoKhan, and to each of the very deserving runners up. I am humbled to have received 2nd place and I wish to thank Jared Brown for a job well done in hosting and judging this competition. As Sharon said, it hardly appeared to be his first.
Cheers,

Hi Sharon, I have attempted to email PhotoKhan through his PBase account. Hopefully that will reach him.

Good idea, Jared! Where is everybody? Maybe all off watching the Olympics. Sharon

Thanks, Jarad,

These were all great photos, and I'm honored to have been one of the finalists. Looks like Smugmug is down for a while, so my link to The Bartender is temporarily kaput.

I like your idea of doing some scratching and burning to make this pohotograph look even more authentic. I think I'll give it a try (using a copy, of course:-)

Just in case anyone is interested, The Bartender was a grab shot taken at the restaurant attached to the Cloisters in NYC (and, yes, a convent is a rather odd place for a bar). The photograph was converted to black and white sepia in Photoshop, and I added just a touch of blur to put some shimmer into the glass and send it onto the Wayback Machine.

states that if the winner hasn't replied in 24 hours then the next challenge can go to the 2nd place winner, LScottC, if he is willing. You have given PhotoKahn plenty of time to respond and done your best to get in touch with him. Perhaps you would like to ask LScottC if he would like to take over? Sharon

...time...

PhotoKhan is an airline pilot and likely on a several day trip -- he is highly reliable and more important to us, a creative photog, it'll be well worth waiting for his challenge!

Thanks for the distinction, Jarred...!

I am truly proud of winning this Challenge and can only but convey my admiration to all of those who also entered such great photos!

Sorry for replying so late to this honor (...and thanks also for the "heads up" on Pbase, Jarred...)

Those of you who tried to guess were right...I was away on work.

I usually take the laptop along with me but this was supposed to be a short 1 night away from home trip that, because of operational irregularities, turned out to be 3 full days long...Grrr...

I have another Challenge already readied up but I don't want to break any rules...Please advise if you feel I can proceed with posting it up guys!

All the best and thank you all!

PK

The most important rule I think is to enjoy our hobby.... so If you are the winner, you are here, and you have a challenge ready... give it a go! :)

Let's get the ball rolling now...!
