And a lot of other stuff in this thread - but I don't know to what extent they are being purely theoretical, and in practical engineering terms for the time being we are not likely to see much movement in densities - note that this is an old thread, and that as some of the resolution limits talked about here are approached, then the practical issues of how to put in more rez at a reasonable cost get important.

From Chuck's interview it appears to me that at present Canon have decided that the practical way to improve system performanse is to address other parts of the system, notably lenses - but this could also include the DIGC II processor, and it might perhaps be worthwhile to move beyond 12 bits, to perhaps 14bits.

So perhaps rather than a stop to increasing pixel densities, we might be looking at more of a plateau whilst other parts of the system are optimised - the new 17-55/2.8 is certainly better than the 30D sensor.
