Super wide zoom + Teleconverter: any combo working?

With the new Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens priced around 1200$, Minolta Anti-Shake looks sweeter than ever...

And by the way, my main idea would be getting the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 (or the new Tamron 17-50 f/2.8), but I know that I´ll be missing the long end for portraits. I´ve found mixed comments about this possibility, some people saying that TCs don´t work with shorter focal lenghts (Minolta specs say so), and some others saying the opposite. So, two questions:

1) Do you have any possitive experience with this kind of combo?

2) If so, which brand or particular TC do you think is most likely to make the trick? (Seems like Kenko PRO tends to be a 4x4, but not sure about that...)

Thanks a lot.
