Re: New lens for my D70s!

I have experience with 3 out the 4 options you list. Can't comment on the old 70-210D, other than that it's way overpriced on eBay due to a certain Ken Rockwell hyping it...

I can't see how that lens would be any better than the current offerings, though.

So, let's see:

  • My fiancee uses the 28-200 G on her D70 and N80. It's really good for a 7x zoom! Light weight, pretty fast AF, and sharp enough. It is, however, not the sharpest zoom we own!

  • The 70-300 ED is a little better until about 200mm. From 70-150mm it's really sharp all over, even wide open it's not too bad. At 200mm it's good at f/8 and f/11, but f/5.6 is softer, especially in the corners. Beyond 200mm it gets pretty soft, even at f/8 - I was never happy with the image quality at 300mm. I just ended up selling it on eBay for more than I paid for it

  • The 55-200 DX is the lens I currently use as a lightweight telephoto. Build quality is so-so, focus is not superfast (still slightly faster than the 70-300), but optically this one delivers the goods! Very sharp lens, even at 200mm wide open, right into the corners!

I highly recommend it. If you want better image quality, be prepared to spend serious money on the 80-200 2.8 (which I also have, fabulous lens!)...

From what I heard, the Sigma 70-300 APO is about as good as the Nikon 70-300 ED, to give you a point of reference.

Hope this helps
