Hi everyone,

I just purchased the D200 body and have some doubts as to whether I got an unused body (as in not used in the showroom). If anyone else who has purchased the D200 could answer the following questions, it'd be VERY much appreciated.

1 - I noticed that when I pealed off the protective film (which had some debris between the film and cover, not to mention it looked like it could of been taken off and reapplyed) from the plastic protective cover for the lcd, the protective cover had minute scratches on it (by no means large and very noticeable, but nevertheless, it is faintly scratched, shouldn't a new cover be flawless???). Did anyone else notice very faint scratches on the lcd protective cover (the detachable one)?

2 - When I inserted a newly charged battery and turned on the camera for the first time ever, it was already in a menu (shooting menu) other then the language menu. The manual states that the camera starts (only on the first power up) automatically in the language selection menu when you start it for the first time, mine didn't start there (so it was previously started?). Anyone else's camera start in any other menu?

Did anyone else notice the same things on their new D200 body? Perhaps it sounds silly, but I paid for a new (unused) camera, and that's what I expect. Mine was made in Thailand. If anyone can confirm their observations to my above questions (1 and 2) and confirm whether or not they had the same thing, it'd be very very much appreciated. Thank you!!!

The date was set correct, but the time was not correct (the time zone was not correct too). Although the camera is made in Thailand, and I'm also living there right now (temporary work).

What do you think? ..any comments on your D200? Was the lcd protective cover not completely scratch free?

My cover was 100% scratch free, the protective sheet was on firmly with no bubbles or way for debris to get in. Mine did NOT start up in the language menu either, but flashed "clock" in the top LCD until I set the time.

It was like this on both D200's I had.

I'm about to return mine for banding issues, I'll be sure to reset the clock to some ambigous time.

Just kidding, but I am returning it, I hope yours is ok. The camera feels so right.

I already did that, the count is 1214. Although even if it is a showroom camera, it's hard to believe that they'd take 1214 photos?!!? What is the shutter release count on other people's new camera? I just read too about someone with a D2X that had very high shutter count too...

Not good, It would be a bad day at the camera store if they would have sold it to me. Good luck.

I wonder if that shutter count is from Nikon's quality control for the camera before they release it (verifying it works). Anyone else post their shutter releases when new?

Gary, you have the uncanny ability to turn anything vile. It's not like they're being built in huts.

Nikon Thailand, in the city of Ayutthaya, is a new and impressive facility.

All D70's and D200's have been made their from the beginning.

The EXIF showed the image count as 1 when I viewed the first picture taken with my D2x. I also made sure the packaging appeared factory fresh before I left B&H with it.

Right, only the workers live in a shantytown. The cameras live in a modern air conditioned factory.

The cameras are being outsourced to Thailand, it is factual any inferance to anything vile is obviously in your head. Do you think there is something wrong with outsourcing to Thailand? Get real.

Just curious. I dont care where they are made, as long as they work :)
