Hi guys,

I just recieved my Tamron 24-135mm lens. I was really exited at first but unfortunatly I noticed that it has a chip on the outer edge. I just wanted to know whether this is significant enough to where I should return the lens or just keep it. I hate the fact that its there but if its of no significance I'll be ok with it. There are no flaws in the photos I've taken but I don't want it if it will become a significant problem in the future. Here's the photo:

The chips are outside the image circle of the lens and should not affect the image quality. I believe that the lens in question is a FF lens and thus the APS C sensor will record from the middle 66% of the lens.

The lens should be fine under the proviso that it wasn't dropped to get these chips on it. If it was dropped, then there maybe misalignment issues.

I don't know what You paid for the lens or where You got it from--But, personally I would never keep damaged or faulty merchandise of any kind.

I bought the lens for $170, I've bought from this company before(on eBay, I've been buying camera supplies from them for over 3 years). They offer an excellent return policy but I know I won't get this lens for the same price. More opinions would definatly be welcome.

Thanks,

the chips will not affect performance, I wouldn't worry about them. You could try a spot of black indelible marker on the chips just to avoid any possibility of flare etc. It is a very good price and an acceptable trade-off, I would keep it.

I see posts stating that "it' just a little scratch, chip, discolored etc, and read posts to the effect "if it's working don't worry about it. However one of the biggest complaints against companies across the board, auto, electronics, you name it, is lack of customer concern, IE: poor quality control. Consumers are going to get what the accept. It is our responsibility to hold manufacturers and distributers responsible for their products.

If you are satisfied with the images it gives you I'd keep it and not worry. You probably won't find another in better condition at the price you paid. A chip on the edge of the front element should have no effect in image quality on an APS DSLR. As another poster wrote, if you think it is causing dlare, spotting it with a black marker pen will cure this.

Ok thanks guys, you've aleviated my worries a bit. I'll stick with this lens until we find out whether the 17-70mm Sigma is any good or not. Thanks for the input. BTW for those who wondered, I got the lens for $170 from wz-photo on eBay. They are a great company, I've been buying photo supplies from them for a while now, this was the first "issue".
Thanks
