D2x or D200 - which one to ebay!

Hi David

I guess the choice was already made really - I take better pictures when I'm comfortable, and the colour's better!

Absolutely!
Nearly as high as Flick's!

I'll tell you if I change my mind.

It would have been so easy!

I did buy a couple of Amazon's silly priced Olympus E500's, and ended up with a two lens kit for £200 (emma has it). I guess it's having the courage of one's convictions.

but not that much better - comparing them makes it seem so, but after ten minutes you can't 'feel' the difference.

Hi David

Maybe, one day it'll come - but I'd like some kind of IS solution into the bargain!

finally,I, well be able to get some sleep over what had to be a
tough decision for you, Jono.
Personally I took a similar route before, and after much
deliberation I kept the S2 and sold a D1x. As time wore on I
purchased the mb16 to try to get that feel again. It only proved to
the weak link in the tripod to camera connection. even though the
image quality from the fuji was at that time, top shelf. I never
was totally comfortable with the limitations, the few that were
there, or the feel, after handeling a pro body. I went to a D2h
from there and although a smaller file I couldnt have been happier
handeling that bad boy.. Now I've got the X too and I won't make
that mistake again.
But if it works for you, go for it........

Money has nothing to do with it. I just don't call it up short
anymore.
No - you're quite right - If I found I'd liked the D2x better - then it would stay, it isn't about money - it's not very relevant in comparison with the time one spends with it.

As for sleepless nights? well, it hasn't caused me any!

Hi Mike
. . . I see.

. . . undecided? Second thoughts overwhelming one? Onset of
pre-partum depression? Seller's remorse? Non-seller's remorse?
Lol - not really (do you see a question mark in the title!).
Banding in the D200 image of the D2x causing delays? Or just
fiddling around and adding to the drama?
Oh - I always like a bit of drama - as for banding - well, to my credit, I'm not quite as anal as some, but I haven't seen any in 1500 shots - it'll do for now, and it has a warranty, and they can fix it - no problem
All in good fun.
and taken that way (of course).

kind regards
(I hope you're well)

Hi Adam
good to talk this evening.
We agree about the virtues of the D200 - really a splendid piece of kit.

Hi David
....I'm afraid I still disagree with your decision (not that my
opinion should matter).
Well, I'm very interested in it at the very least! (and of course, I do respect it).
The more sophisticated (better?) AWB alone would be the deciding
factor for me (admittedly I only have the 2x, not the 200),
Well, OK, but I'd guess the D200 only gets it wrong about 5% of the time, and if you're shooting raw . . . .
and
then when you also consider the slightly higher resolution
I did some comparison shots at 19X16 - same shot, same lens, same tripod - different camera - I could only find 10 people interested to look - half of them thought the D2x had better resolution - 9 of them liked the D200 shot better.
slightly better build.....well, that would seal it.
But neither of them is a patch on the E1 . . . .except for those nice rubber wheels!
Nonetheless, I wish you well as always. And I'm sure you'll be
content with your decision.
LOL - well, I'm not one for regrets about cameras (don't give 'em a second thought).

I do find the colours better on the D200 however - greens were always an irritation with the D2x, the D200 is much better.
kind regards

I finally left Canon completely a year or so back and went fully Olympus. Because of the demand for higher megapixels from clients I am going Nikon so your thread is of great interest. It's only the banding issue that scares me off the D200. david

I decided to forego the D2x because it's just too freakin' big and
heavy.
The D2x certainly isn't a camera for whimps. Best take your ear medication, apply your acne cream and take a nap.

Hi Jono, Interesting to read your posts on the D200. I started to get one also, but decided to wait until later this year. I have a D70 and D2H and couldn't decide which one to keep. I also have the Olympus E-1 and decided to buy a second body since their price has come down so much. I'll be interested in seeing your experiences with the D200 and hopefully will get one in the Fall.

for me you missed one of the major advantages of the d2x, namwly the 100% frame view in the rangefinder. the d200 is just 95%. i like to compose the shot in the field and because the prints i sell are 24 x 36 inches i need every pixil in the frame. i did a two week photo tour in france last october using a 5d (96% frame view) and shot about 4000 frames. of the 5% that i printed nearly everyone had something in the periphery that needed to be cropped out. a pain in the a$$. my d200 is going to be limited to familly snaps, the little flash is usefull.
