I've been trying to find a store locally that has the LX1 so I can see what it's like live, so to speak. So I was asking a sales girl in Best Buy why there weren't any Panasonic cameras on display and she said "Oh we don't carry those. None of the big stores do. They just aren't as reliable as the other brands and if we carry them it gives our store a bad name when they break" I realise this isn't exactly a very reliable source but I have noticed that the big retailers don't seem to carry Panasonic.

So how are Panasonic for quality and reliabilty? I notice the original one on test at dcreviews broke.

thanks,
Mike

I can't give you a market analysis, but I've owned two Panasonic cameras (FZ10 and LX1) and both have proven to be superb performers with not a single problem.

I haven't had the LX1 very long yet, but I made well over 10,000 exposures with the FZ10 before selling it to a friend of mine. I'd never sell a friend a camera I didn't trust to be good. He's continuing to make beautiful photographs with it.

Or have a look at this one:

I have used Panasonic cameras for several years now and have found them to be very reliable as well as an excellent value.

If you want advice on digital cameras, I would not be looking to the sales associates at Best Buy. Their expertise is question at best, IMO. A full service camera store or lots of on-line research would be your best bet for informed opinions.

Good Lord...Panasonic cameras, excellent. TV's, Excellent. I have shopped out camcorders and I am buying PV-GS150, yes a "panasonic." There are good quality cameras out there too. The girl obviously has not a clue to make a statement like that...ha.

Gene already showed you a link to the place where you could buy Panasonic cameras on-line, from Best Buy. I've now had 5 different Panasonic cameras, and not a trouble with any of them. In fact, I've dropped a couple of cameras, not on purpose, and they both survived a sharp fall without injury. Another thing you might note is that with the exception of Panasonic, all of the other major camera manufacturers have recently conducted recalls for defects in some of their cameras. Don't bother asking that girl any more questions?

Thanks for all the replies and reassurance. I realise I probably shouldn't have paid any attention to her but I'd recently read Jeff Keller's LX1 review, where the first LX1 he was testing broke before he could finish the review, so I was a little concerned. I still haven't found anyone local that has the LX1, but my favorite online camera store now has the black one in stock, so I guess I've run out of excuses for not buying. Of course I could wait for the noise free LX2........ :-)

the girl doesn't know what the puck she's talking about. you can walk into a fry's (a far lager store than a best buy) any day of the week and find the full line of panasonic cameras and camorders and floor models for each one.

by the way, i asked a best buy associate that same question and she simply said the stores only carry panasonic camcorders, but if i wanted the camera, i could go to the online store kiosk and order one from thier online store for an instore pick up at that store.

the girl you spoke to reminds me of the time i asked a honda rep. at a car show about the maintenence costs of a hybrid engine and she said there were no maintenence costs because a hybrid engine is electric and therefore has no moving parts.

Thanks for the info. There's a Fry's across town (should have thought of them before). It's a bit of a trek, but maybe I can check out the LX1 there. Liked the Honda story.

The girls an expert at selling

If a customer wants a brand you don't stock then do it down

she wasn't going to get a sale with "there great shame we don't stock them"

If you search the different brand forums here for words like
"broken", "repair" etc and compare the hits to the total number
of posts, you should get an indication. I think Panasonic will
compare well.

Previous posts have pretty much said. I do find it interesting that Panasonic hasn't gotten their products into certain markets such as Sams Club, Target and other big retailers. Consequently, in some areas it can be a little difficult finding a local store to get a "hands on" experience.

My FZ20 is just about one year old, and I think the quality of the camera in terms of case, solidness, etc. is as good as it gets...and superior to many cameras in the same price range. And for very good images with stabilized super zoom....there aren't any better cameras out there...maybe one or two that can be considered a close tie.

I won't be upgrading anytime soon...but I really drool when I think of what may be coming out in two or more years from now.....then I might be ready to take advantage of the improvements that will surely be available. Look how far we've come since the early days of "incredible" 2 mega pixel cameras that had very high prices!!

It's of course a typical seller BS. They don't want you to go elsewhere and buy the brand they don't carry.

Now, that's true that Panasonic cameras are not always available everywhere. That's because they are relatively new in this market (2-3 years I believe), but Panasonic has a good reliability record in general for other type of electronics.

Tip: look at user reviews for a particular model. If it has a problem, it will show up rather quickly.

Dropped it mountain biking and it never slowed down. Look the digital camera review section of Consumers Reports, and Panasonic is at the top of the reliability ranking.

I've broken three Olympuses out of three (two C-2100's failed, one C-4040 failed, the C-8080 is still going). Never a problem with three Panas.

It should have. It may need replacement.

After buying a FZ20 (also had/have FZ10, FZ5, LC70) I had some trouble with the main multidirectional button. I sent it for repair in Elgin under warranty and a cable apparently came loose. Not a single problem since then. I've also dropped my LC70 many times and it works like a champ.

She is full of bull and was only trying to get you to be interested in buying something they have. They want your money that is all.

As for why many of the big electronic stores don't carry them. I suspect it is because most joe-sixpacks don't even know Panasonic makes digitial cameras. These stores generally have limited to shelf space and use about 90% of that for dirt cheap cameras with names people are used to seeing like Sony, Olypus, Canon, etc. The remaining 10% is used for one or two mid-range dSLR's ones they know are hot and popular so that they will sell.

They simply can't be bothered wasting limited space on cameras that are not going to be top sellers. Sometimes they carry these others on their web site so you can order them, but not always.

The last thing that happens especially with mom and pop stores is that they carry the brands that the owners know and like. For example here in Santa Rosa we have one camera store it is Shutterbug and they primarily carry digital cameras from makers like Nikon, Canon, Pentax, etc. They have next to nothing from companies that have not been in the cameras business for years. This I believe reflects they owners thinking that only the old camera companies can make great cameras.

This I think is false. In fact I think by and large companies that have never made a film cameras tend to do a better job on digital than companies that have made film cameras for decades. I think they are just too caught up trying to build digital cameras that operate like film cameras instead of making digital cameras for digital. There are expections to this, but not as many as one would think. Canon seems to manage most of the exceptions.

Just my 2 cents,

Robert

has a few Panasonics, like the fx-9 and fx-30, but I havent seen the lx1 anyway. You may end up going to a camera store for that one.

...by the salesman at a Ritz Camera in FL, the only difference was that he was then referring to Olympus as Ritz doesn't carry Olympus cameras.

She needs to read more magazines and talk about photography to a wider audience.
