Fine vs. Superfine

I'm new to the Canon digital camera line, having just bought an SD400 to complement my Nikon 5400. I notice than in Fine mode my 1gb SD card should give me about 700 photos at 5mp, but in Superfine mode it drops to about 350 pictures.

I understand that this is due to the difference in the amount of compression the camra applies in creating each JPG file. My question is how noticeable the difference really is under two conditions:

First, in printing 4x6 inch photos (which is my primary use for the SD400) and second, in printing 8x10 inch photos (since ya never know...).

Any observations from more exepreinced Canon users would be most appreciated. I assume that the model of camera does not make much difference here, as the algorithms in the current camera line should be pretty much the same. TIA...
