Indoor photography at night

Hi

During the day (indoors and outdoors) I will generally shoot in Av mode, but as soon as the sun goes down I struggle to shoot in a 'Creative' mode - both outdoors and indoors (unless with harsh fluorescent light).

I'm going out to a dinner party tomorrow evening and would like to shoot in the 'Creative' mode tomorrow night instead of one of the auto modes. I only have the kit lense - unfortunately no fast lenses yet.

Do as one out there have a few quick and nasty rules of thumb for indoor night photography (low light)? With and without flash? BTW, I'm extremely inexperienced with flash photography - I don't have an external flash.

Thanks
Glen
