Wide zoom or not, for compact?

I am posting some links/images of my favorite photographers' pictures (Diane Arbus, Josef Koudelka). Can you look at them and tell me what zoom was used, wide or not? My considerations for compact, street camera are:
Ricoh GRD (wide zoom, high ISO)(cons: slow RAW writing)
Canon S80 (wide zoom)(cons: heavier than the other 3)
Fuji E900 (normal zoom, high ISO)
Sony DSC N-1 (light and small)

What I don't understand mainly, because I don't have enough experience with optics, is whether I want a wide zoom or not. If I am to attempt to take pictures like the ones I have posted, would I need a wide zoom camera? If yes, then my choices are left to the GRD vs. S80.

Other issues that are important will be:
image quality (if only JPG is offered, then it better be artifact free)
fast responsive start and shoot (shutter lag is it?)
8+ mpx, for printing high res and 8X10 images.

ISO 200, 400 -- all have it, although E900 and GRD's ISO get even higher; I'll mostly use the camera w/o flash.
