Why 24mmx36mm and not 36mmx36mm?

Why 24mmx36mm and not 36mmx36mm?

Maybe someone has asked this question before, but I have been wondering it for years.

If your lenses are round, then it would seem reasonable to have a square negative/picture/image. I would say round picture but that would be annoying. I think you see where I am going with this.

Why do we process for a rectangle shape 24mm x 36mm and not something like 24mm x 24mm or 36mm x 36mm or some instance in between? I know historically we have always had 24mm x 36mm shots, but what is the technological reasons for 24x36?
