7D, 7Di, and 9D interfaces

just the obvious..

ISO choice to include Hi/Low key (ie like 5D)
active meter for flash in M mode (ie like 5D) :)

With the 7D as a reference, what changes do you want to see in the
interfaces of the 7Di and the 9D?
A custom function that allows me to put ISO on the front jog dial while in A and S mode, so I stop hitting the MSET button when trying to hit the ISO button.

An improved controller, so it's easier to get the diagnal focal points.

Minor - Shift the VF housing back a bit, so it's at least level with the LCD protector.

Minor - Reset the gyro that senses camera shake so when it's on a tripod / perfectly still, it doesn't always show 1 bar on the shake meter

Minor - While the 7D viewfinder is very nice, brighten it a bit

It's hard to come up with improvements. Very nice interface!

Here's a left field idea:

Provide AS on the viewfinder/focus screen. Achieve focus lock faster, sync focus screen AS with CCD AS - more accurate / responsive CCD AS while providing a stablized view? Grin you asked!

I would like to see the thumb dials become knobs, or rather hybrid knob/dials. Have a dial have a shaft that comes out the top and becomes a knob. Basically while finger sliding a dial is ok, it's a bit of pain. I'd like a knob I could grab hold of. I just hate sitting their rubbing a dial with my finger to get it where I want.

If possible, make them had set A and S markings, So i can just set them with a turn and never look at the camera screen or any screen.

I think it would be a crowning achievement for them to make a camera like the 9D be fully operational without use of any LCD screen.

Some other things is I would like to see the lens release turned 90 degrees. So it's perpendicular to the lens, not parallel. I find having to push back on the camera while turing a bit difficult and makes it hard to change a lens with one hand. This is how my x700 has it. I don't know if this bad design has been with all their AF cameras.

I slide reduction in the amount of force needed to switch the shooting mode would be nice. changing the timer time, or from single to continuous and such is a bit harsh, and prone to overshoot where you want it once you get it going.

Why didn't the compensate knob (left one) locks when you dial but only at the zero position? its pretty easy to adjust by accident.

Agree?

I don't know about the interfaces but I think D200 fills in the gap between 7D and 9D.
If there is an 8D, then Canon 5D will be it.

A flash mode switch like on the film 7 would be nice (but not essential). And the AF mode selector could be re-located to the rear. Otherwise the interface is just great.

There aren't too many things I'd change. The only gripe I ever really had was that its physicaly hard to select the diagonal AF points with the control. Also I don't like the position of the DoF preview button now that I think about. Oh and I've always found the AF/MF mode switch a bit fiddly but I suppose it stops it from moving accidentally.

1/8000 or/and ISO 50. 21 EV @ f/22 is not enough. 24EV would be awsome.

3EV exposure compensation scale in viewfinder like on the LCD or better just displaying + - ## EV instead of a scale

Bracketting option of up to 9 frames and up to 1EV

Allow spot metering to store exposure values up to eight spots within a scene. Let the camera calculates the average exposure. Like the Multispot card.

Display EV values that will make it easier for people to swtich ISO, F-top and speed and know what they are doing with the EV

Make the buttons on the grip consistent with the buttons in landscape format.

Internal dust cleaning

Allow card swapping during buffer dump. When you run out of space in the middle of dumping the buffer allow a card swap and to continue dumping the buffer on the other card.

Improve the Diopter to make it clear when there is zero diopter effect so I can be sure it's right.

An abort button. Ever click the shutter to realize you had it set to 15 secs? Nothing you can do but ride it out. Stuff like that would make an abort button nice to just stop everything and let you move on.

Pre programed instant mode button. Yes you can have the 1 2 3 modes, but that takes time to change to. Would be nice to have a single button you can hit and switch to a pre-set mode you can create. Basically so you can be doing your thing, but say something incredible happens or jumps up in front of you, you can tap a button and be ready for it. (I'd have a widest aperture Aperture priority with about ISO 200 set) so then if I'm walking and a dear jumps up or something like that, one tap of a button and I can jump to that mode.

Mirror Lock Up button. Connected to a real mirror lock up, not just mirror pre-fire

Happens to me all the time. Just turn off the camera and back on.

  1. 1: I would like to see separation
of autobracket and self-timer/MLU knob.

I want to be able to simultaneously
self-time/MLU while auto-bracketing,
which is impossible with current knob
layout.
  1. 2: The LCD should turn off
when your eye is at the view
finder and you push the ISO button.
  1. 3: The vertical grip button layout
should be the same as the horizontal
grip, and not mixed around.

I believe that can be done with a firmware upgrade for the 7D, no need for a "7Di" !

On the 7D, simply turn the power off. It will stop capture and write the file to the card, while it shows the preview on the screen. After the file has been written, the camera powers off. Alternately, you can just switch off and back on and it will do the same thing.

especially the AF area selector - the camera's one is much more convenient.
