Played with a D200 today

Jono

Come on, you've got to be kidding me. My signature is what everyone elses signature is: a boiler plate for every post.

we don't know anything yet. we don't know the good and we don't know the bad. what we know are specs. To date, and correct me if I am wrong, Lonestar Digital is the only site with an official review. Phil has a preview with no samples. The lonestar review was very favorable and I thought well done. I'm looking forward to the other reviews!

Understandable, and the funny thing is I am debating whether to "upgrade" my D2H to a D200. I'm pretty darn sure on the D70 side, how responsive the D200 is will make the decision for me regarding the D2H.

From your signature line I just had this picture of watching you turning blue holding your breath for FF :-). Didn't want to see you hurt yourself you know...

I think that your rationale is quite correct. I want the extra megapixels, and have been considering the D2X, as a lot of what I shoot is "way over there", quite a distance away and I can't nearly fill the frame even at 500mm plus a TC-14E. The extra MP's give the ability to crop more and still have enough. These really are tough decisions, aren't they? And so darned individual that I tend to try not to even make recommendations to friends.
Bill

My long time stance on upgrading, and this applied to non-camera
gear, is to upgrade when the new model offers features that will
enhance my experience. I upgraded from the D100 to the D2H for
auto focus speed and buffer size. Thos features in addition to CLS
enhanced my experience. The D200 outside of megapixels doesn't
enhance my experience. The day may come that I will upgrade
bodies, but for right now that day is not here. By no means would
I suggest people use my rationale for product purchases; everyones
decision making process is different. This one works for me.

LOL

And a big thank you to Peter from me too - one thing that seems to be universal, is a feeling that this is a beautifully made camera.

Let's hope it's one to fall 'in love' with!

kind regards

And if you read Peter's original post you would know the answer to your question:

Quoting from the original post:

" And no, sorry, I didn't sneak some images on my CF card. I have a good professional relationship with Nikon and I'm not about to jeopardise that in any way."
when I go to try a new digital camera I use my " storage " so I can
see the photos at home. Why you no?

I can only speak for myself, but everytime I see your signature it reignites the irritations of those silly arguments all over again.

Bet it does for some others as well.

Peter I wasn't calling you a liar. Slow down. My response was to
this "...from others who had handled the camera. Everyone seems
very positive about the general feel and build quality." I was
saying that I've yet to see someone come on and call it bad; and to
that end it's rare people say hey I played with the D2X, or D200,
or D70s, etc. and offer a negative take.
Among the comments I had read regarding the build quality was this from Kamera & Bild, a swedish independent photo magazine (very good IMO) - a rough translation:

"When I hold the new Nikon D200 in my hands the impression is that it feels like a digital version of Nikon F6, or a D2X with the bottom chopped off. The body is built of metal with the solid feel a pro camera should have. It feels like its made out of a single block of metal, not only like it has a metal shell, which is the feel of the competitors Canon 20D and 5D."

Hi Adam
Jono

I wasn't throwing a stone at Peter at all. I even reached out to
him via email to clarify my point. If it came off as me taking a
swipe at him, I apologize for that, because it wasn't my intention.
Great - I'm glad to hear it.
Seriously, my only point was I've never seen someone on this
specific forum ever report that they hated the camera the played
with. Maybe it's happened before, but I have never witnessed it.
With my memory I can't remember what anyone said yesterday, let alone last week.

Still, you have to admit, that from the handling point of view all the recent Nikons have been rather wonderful (when was the last poor handling Nikon dSLR? the only one I didn't much like was the D100!).
Your points about the 5D thread are completely valid; and it's
wonderful to see.

But then who is being childish, those that get irritated over something that doesn't even effect them or me for having a boiler plate? I mean what if my sig said Still awaiting the worlds first solar powered DSLR. I doubt that would ire people; heck even a few would laugh.

BOILER is absolutely correct. I was going to post the same thing that Jono did for me. Since you seem to have so much time, maybe you could give us a count on the posts that have expressed their negative opinions of your signature. I currently refuse to take your post seriously until you change your signature. There, see how silly it looks? We will probably see a FF Nikon before you see the light on this. Every time I see your signature it reminds me of some of your earlier posts that I spent the time to read. I then realized that you were a possessed person. Same thing, ad nauseum. And even if you respond to another thread and don't insult someone and have a valid contribution, I find it difficult to take seriously.

I don't dislike you and think you have made some valid, intelligent points, again and again and again...and remind me again and again and again with your signature.
Regards,
Shooter2

It's funny how many different takes people have on things. I much prefer the 10 pin connector. The old screw in remote release on my S2 Pro is one of the things I dislike about it. I think it is too awkward and creates too much movement versus an electronic release. I'm sure things like this make the engineers pull their hair out. One fool wants a 10 pin and the next guy hates it.

I think it's fair not to take images home...because there will be some final tweaking, I'm sure before they ship.

Also, had I taken them home, I would have been bothered by people for copies of them. And if had given them copies, it would be all over the forums and people would be evaluating images on the basis of a shopping mall interior with mixed lighting in a pre-production camera.

That would not be correct or fair to the camera, to the potential purchasers of it, and so on.

I'd rather stay clear of that. If the noise performance is as good as the D50, I'll be more than happy.

Actually, I'd welcome someone telling me that it's a dog. Then I could just replace my stolen D70 with a D70s and be happy. I understand what you are saying, but really, look at what's being said here.

A guy reports ACTUAL experience with the camera, and is pleased. Fine, we can all accept that at face value. In fact, one thing that people have been questioning is how good it the autofocus. I expected nothing less than stellar performance, but I have to agree, no one has previously commented on this. Peter did and was impressed.

Now, you are clearly, by your sig, disappointed that this is not a full frame camera. Therefore, you are, frankly, not interested in it. Yet you feel some need to downplay a positive, hands on, review of the camera, though clearly based on a prerelease version. I think we can all agree that this is not a full review of the camera, but it's nice to hear from anybody that actually gets to touch one. One could make the case that you are the one fishing from a moving boat, so to speak. Do you have any real qualifications to call into question Peter's qualification to make a judgement about this camera? Can you document his incompetence that you seem to call into question?

Cheers,
Eric

Hi Bill,

Nice to chat to you again.

Focus acquisition seemed good to me, not substantially different from the X or H. People on the escalator tracked fine. The camera was set for C, but the AF-on button which I normally use was not set up, so it felt different, but thats just a setting. The focus points will take some getting used to for me, they seemed quite largish in retrospect. But one gets used to these things, and 20 mins is not too much time to spend.

As I said, and for me this is important, I'll be able to use the X and the 200 simultaneously without feeling that I'm jumping from a Merc into a Mini. That's important for me from a use point of view.

I just heard a rumor that shipment has been halted on D100's while
they wait for a firmware patch to create a GPS tracking anti-theft
feature because some guy tried to steal one from a show in South
Africa.
Now you made me spit my breakfast cereal all over my keyboard...
