Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm looking to pick up a couple of spares. WHat's the difference between the various 511 series\? I see 511 through 514.

Also, are there any ultra high capacity thirdparty batteries that I should consider?

Thanks.

One charge can last you over 500+ shots.
Is that enough for you?
Aside from that, the higher capacity will give you more shots.
However, I do find the 511 enough capacity.

What's real in Digital?

The various Canon batteries seem to differ in capacity (e.g. 511 = 1100mAh, 511A = 1390 mAh, etc.). Like with other components, technology marches on.

Looking through the 20D forum I found that replacement 511 batteries from SterlingTek ( http://www.sterlingtek.com/ ) seem quite popular. Their 511 equivalent costs $12 and packs 1800 mAh, which beats anything Canon has. I ordered a couple for my 5D.

Not to advertise for them but I ordered the Sterlingtek batteries over 2 years ago. Quite a few, since I used a G2 and a 10D at the time as well as running a Optio100MC DV Cam which all used the BP-511.

They are still running strong. Never had a problem with them so far. For the price I paid, all I can say is wow.

Canon says the 5D charger says it works with any 511/511A/512/514 battery, and if folks have been using SterlingTEK 511 replacement with 10D and 20D chargers for years, I think the risk is low.
good luck, I have heard they may not work with the 5D charger

Page 25 of the 5D user guide states "figures..based on...511A. ...shots possible with ...514 is the same. .....possible shots with 511 or 512 will be about 75% of the figure"

Thererfore the 514 gives 1/3rd more shots between charges.
