I don't think it's an issue. Cropping is normally used to help your composition or fit your photo to a given print size, not to extract subjects from the photo (though you can do that too;-). If you roughly managed to frame your subject, you only need to crop a little bit and won't lose much resolution.

The extended zoom mode is indeed a crop of the whole 8mp sensor. It's useful to help you frame more distant subjects and get the right composition at the time of the shot. You should then not need to crop the photo very much.
