17-35 2.8, 17-55 2.8, 28-70 2.8 not long enough

Am in the market for 2 pro lenses for D70 (wide zoom and longer focal zoom) and see that most agree the above 3 are superior, but I know I will find them all too short for the work I do.

I have a full compliment of prime lenses, but goal is to consolidate and minimize changing lenses.

There are longer zooms out there and would like to know if anyone has achieved excellent results from a lens in the 28-85/100/120 range.

Looking for great color, sharpness, and contrast. Speed is important but not critical due to the majority of the work I do with artificial lighting.
(although I would like to do some available lighting)

I am thinking I would go with the 17-35 2.8 plus the other recommened.
I do a lot of inside location with flash and portable lighting setup.
Should I also consider DX may be obsolite with newer camera bodies?

Reading this forum has nixed the 12-24 and the 24-120 from my list due to a lot of negative comments.
