DSLRS "Perfect Format?"

I was recently having an intersting discussion with some photographer friends. The topic was with all the R&D the major 35mm slr manufacturers dumped into developing Dslrs, do you think they considered a change in the "35mm" film format?

Personally, with all the flexibility PS offers PP work, maybe a square Dslr "film" format would be better, no more awkward rotating of the camera/flash bracket for verticals. Or, how about a format to match a 6X7, for a fuller 4X5in. "proof"?, no cropping for 8X10, 16X20.....
IMHO, I think the "35mm" format is the least desirsble format of all three.
We're interested to get some of your opinions on this.
