It was very funny. I dropped my daughter off at her martial arts class and decided to piddle around town, park my car once in awhile and take some shots. What the hell is wrong with people?

I was at this one location for at least 10 minutes. Parked my car by a park on street that had a good incline, which gave a nice view of the city. I took a couple of shots with the kit tele and walked up a bit further for a better perspective and did the same again. I want to try and build up a stock of good shots for any future local photo contests. I made sure to get no license plates and no people in the shot. When I was done, I realised that it was getting close to the end of my daughters class, got in the car and began to drive off. As I did, I saw in my rear view mirror, a Chinese lady quickly walk/run (it was like she was moving her arms as if running but her legs were walking ... kinda funny) and she began to write down my license plate.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of thing?

I've heard of it but it's extremely silly, IMO, and I hope whoever she reported it to had the sense to realize that.

If a woman did that, no one would bat an eye.

Or maybe she figured you might sell her some great landscape shots? ;)

Maybe she thought I was hot, and wanted to set me up with her daughter? LOL.

especially since 9/11. It's no longer uncommon to have a security guard ask you to leave a property while taking images, especially near landmarks. Security cams are everywhere, big brother is watching...sadly!

We have to resist the temptation to alter our style of shooting because others feel threatened. This isn't to suggest that we not respect the privacy of others, just that we ought not to get caught up in this spirit of fear.

Keep shooting bro', and enjoy the experience!

Is that with the E-300, you look serious. Nobody looks twice at
the pocket point and shooters.
That probably makes it even stranger, if you were up to no good you wouldn't really want people to see you, but with a DSLR you do stick out, so you can hardly be accused of 'sneaking around'.

In a suburb of Toronto, actually a half hour drive in a city called Mississauga. And she didn't look Canadian Chinese either. Maybe she wanted to tell me that I forgot my lens hood?

In a bit more serious of a comment, I haven't experienced much 9/11 fallback here in Canada. I mean, other than the border/airport stuff, I have seen nothing different here. Having said that, I was in NYC (Manhattan) last year on the 4th of July weekend, and saw tonnes of police and swat guys with machine guns at the entrance of Grand Central. Kinda cool, but unnerving at the same time.

... I stuck out like a sore thumb.

"Hey, here I am!".

Hmmm. Well, if you stick out that much, you'd might as well carry a handgun too.

You think that's bad? I once had someone call the cops on me when I was taking shots of the business district at night in Singapore...the cops understood my plight but told me that they had to follow-up on the call as it was their duty, etc...understand that I'm a local and don't look particularly suspicious..at least I don't think so :-)

I guess setting up an slr on a tripod late at night in the deserted streets of the central business district of a city sort of sticks out...which prob isn't what someone out to do mischief would do would they...don't really blame the caller though what with all the terror situation.

I'm in Canada as well, just east of Toronto. You might remember an incident in the paper about an individual pointing a camera at the CN tower and being confronted for it. One can also encounter problems in places like Pickering Hydro, and the like. It seems that many are nervous about seeing a person with a camera.

Theresa and Wazza make an especially good point about being seen with a 'serious' camera like a dslr. I suppose some imagine this to be a serious threat.

I didn't hear about the CN Tower thing, I don't read/watch the new much. You have a good point, but with a brain storm you gave me ... I almost think if I even had anything in my hands the same thing would've occurred. It doesn't really bother me, it just seemed a bit odd. But, maybe I seemed odd with a camera? I dunno. I guess I can understand if it was some ordinary street with now view of anything ... then yes. But, you could see Mississauga city hall from that vantage point. I should really post one of the pics to show what I was shooting at.

I'll be back (think Terminator).

...that it happened in Mississauga, this whole thing is even weirder. I just can’t imagine ENYONE doing this, especially there.

I shoot very often in downtown Toronto, buildings, CN Tower, Sky Dome (I hate its new name given by that $^&* person and I’ll never use it) and everywhere else. My E-300 with the battery pack and 50-200 fully extended is not a small tool, yet all I get are occasional curios question from people regarding camera (just the other day I had very interesting conversation with a guy from New Jersey who liked the camera very much). Also, many tourists are walking around with even larger tools without any problems.

Weird indeed…

Next time you're shooting casually, maybe we could meet up. I'd love to see that 50-200 lens of yours. And since you've got a tonne of E-300, maybe I can get some "in-person" advice of you? Naw, just kidding about busting you for some pointers ... but it would be cool to chat as I'm into shooting cars too. Models will be the next thing next year.

Do you belong to any photo clubs in the Toronto area? I just joined the Toronto one from "Meet-Up", but haven't had the time to actually show up to a "day out".

Cheers.

No, I don’t belong to any club. No time for that. My work, family and few other things just don’t leave some extra time, hehehe.

I’m planning to go to Ontario Place to shoot annual Boat Show this Saturday or Sunday, depending on the weather (Saturday seems to get few showers, but you never know).

If you wish to join me, it would be my pleasure. Just send me an e-mail (found in my profile) and we’ll go from there :)… It could be interesting!

Cheers,
Alex.

Dad and I went in a mall with our cameras and we were shooting this beautiful mirror glass dome ceiling. This security guard runs up and says to dad (using OM 2) "sir, sir you aren't allowed to take pictures in here". So dad said sorry while I continued to click away with my new Minox C spy camera. The guard never even figured out I had a camera. Never even talked to me even though I was 6-7 feet away. Whew, what security.
thanks
