I've explained this in several threads already.

First of all, noise is only an ISSUE at ISO 200 and 400, so even if it was slgihtly higher on the 7mp, the benefit of more pixels to work with is worht it.

Secondly, the 7mp chip has been proven to deliver less noise than the 5mp chip in every camera taht has used it so far. Compare noise levels in G6, to G5.

Thirdy, the 7mp chip will have a tigher grain to the noise pattern. Consider what will happen when you take that 7mp image and downsample it to 5mp. It now has considerably LESS noise than the 5mp native image, even if it had slightly more to start with (which, as I mentioned has so far not been the vase with 7mp cams).

So not only does the 7mp give you more resolution on low ISO images, but on high ISO images, the extra resoluton will allow you to downsample to 5mp and end up with less noise overall than if the original image had been taken with a 5mp cam.
