Resolution tests - DSLRs not better than compact digicams?

It is said that DSLRs take better pics due to the same number of pixels being spread over a larger sensor. However, I've just compared the resolution test results at imaging-resource.com for the 350D and my previous digicam, the 8-megapixel Nikon Coolpix 8800. According to the conclusion pages of those reviews, the Coolpix shows strong detail until 1,650 lines, while it's only 1,600 for the 350D. Extinction of the pattern is the same at 2,000 lines.

So what's the truth? Is it true that the picture quality of a compact 8-megapixel digicam is just as good as that of a comparable DSLR as long as there is plenty of light? Because that's what I have always thought.

(Of course I'm not talking about low-light and high ISO capabilities or focusing speed or shutter lag, where the 350D is head over heels above compact digicams.)
