Linear or circular polariser?

I understand a circular polariser is necessary if the lens revolves when auto-focusing, but assumed a linear one would work fine if focusing was internal rather than external. However someone advised me a linear one won't work properly with any autofocus lens as the lens will be unable to focus accurately with it fitted. Is this true?
