An old standby...

1/250s, f/8 was always a good starting setting for most conditions where the light permitted.

Even today when I shoot during the day, I set my camera at f/8, 1/250s and adjust the ISO accordingly 100-400.

If needed, I give up shutter speed first down to 1/125s then f/stop open to f/5.6 before I go above ISO 400.

However, there are always exceptions that seem to work out well too.

If I need to stop action and I am far enough away, I will open up the f/stop and to raise the shutter speed.
