With the growing tendancy for more and more pixels, can anyone with a Pro 90is give me their opinion whether this camera needs a higher pixel count.

I was very favourable impressed by it's review by Phil. Possibly there may be a newer version soon, but if it had some more pixels would you really see any profound difference?

I would be very grateful for any opinions from Pro 90 owners. Also if anyone in Canada has one for sale perhaps they could e.mail me.

Leon,

I had a G1 and recently sold it to buy the Pro 90 to get the 10X lens.

My biggest concern was the reduction in pixels and has proven for me to be unfounded. I am able to print quality 8 x 10 prints and have found that the loss of pixels is minimal.

Their are a few ocassions when I would like to crop an area of a picture and wish I had a few more pixels to do it with but overall I am happy with what I have.

I absolutely love the camera and have to laugh when I see one feature or the other bashed on this forum. The bottom line is the camera takes consistently great pictures, the 10X lens is incredable, and if I were buying a camera today it would be a pro90

Ken

P.S. here is a gallery of pictures if you would like to see what an beginner can do with this camera.

I did the same thing, G1 to Pro90. Yes, it has its drawbacks, the lag is quite bothersome at times, missing shots and all.

But the funny thing is unlike in the past, the new cameras G2, S85 e.g. out now don't excite me anymore. The 10x IS lens is that good. Only thing that comes close is the Minolta 7x digicam.

After using a Sony cd1000 for a while, I bought the pro90 because I like the fact of CF cards instead of the bothersome cdr. I make quite a few 8x10's with this camera and the need for cropping can be avoided because of the sweet 10x zoom. I just wish the zoom was abit more responsive and faster. Other than that, the camera is great and wouldn't hesitate to buy it all over again. As far as a replacement for the pro90, when one comes out, more megapixels won't be the reason I would upgrade this sweet camera ;)

Mickey..please undesrtand that I have been an SLR addict all my life. I was trying out the 90 today and was concerned re what I saw in the eyepiece AFTER I have zoomed. I could not focus on the picture but I noticed a green light after I had half depressed the take pic button. At this stage therefore does this mean that I am in focus?

Leon

The green light means that you are in focus. I concur with the others in saying that the Pro90 is awesome. I was a pretty serious film photographer and refused to jump to digital until I was sure I could print photo quality 8x10s. I have not been disappointed. In fact, due to the ability to tweek in post production, most of my prints have been superior to those I used to get from the labs (I'm printing on the Canon S800). As for the 10x lens, I have been blown away by the flexibility. Add the B-300 1.7x teleconverter (mine should be on its way from Martin) and you have a lens that can capture a fly from 100 yards away! Now go get one!

I'm an enthusiastic novice photographer pondering an upgrade to a D30 from a Pro90, and some of the main reasons are the decrease in shutter lag on the D30 and the ability to use higher ISO settings with less noise. The increase in pixel count is not really a factor in my decision.

After weighing the pros and cons, I've decided to stick with the Pro90 for a while. It isn't quite a baby D30, but pictures from it can be just as good. And getting the equivalent of the Pro90's lens capabilities on the D30 would entail some serious cash, and shortcomings aside, I've realized that I'm not quite ready to part with the ability to have that kind of lens power in such a portable and economical package. I still think about upgrading when I have the money, but in the meantime I'm enjoying an amazing camera.

Vic.l. a favour please. I was given a new Pro 90 yesterday to try out. All seemed to be going well until after I found out that the Software Starter Guide was missing. Can you tell me whether this could be downloaded and if so from where?

My impressions so far are very favourable since it feels good in one hands and not too difficult to use. I believe there is a firmware upgrade but all in time. In the meantime I would like to see what some of my pics look like.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Incidentally have you any feeling re the need to have a higher pixal count as is being suggested in a new? Pro 95?

Hi Leon,

There is indeed a software manual available on the Canon USA site.
It is in PDF format. You can download it from here
