Optimum image size/res for Data Projection

We wish to project digital images at the highest quality we can get with a reasonably economical file size. We use 1024 px for landscape long side and 768px for portrait long side. Has anyone thorougly tested the permutations which will give an image the quality and clarity of a standard similar to 35mm slide projection. Up to 10Mb is OK but if 2-5Mb will do the same job that would be our preference.

Thanks
