>>>Challenge 44: Collective Nouns, Official Thread<<<

Congrats to all the participants of Challenge 43 and thanks to Tim for an excellent topic and gracious hosting. Be sure to visit the Challenge 43 Galleries at http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/cslr43_good_vibrations

The theme for Challenge 44 is 'Collective Nouns':

What, you are thinking, is a collective noun and how do I photograph it? Your challenge is to photograph more than one of an object and title your photograph with the appropriate collective noun.

a flock of geese
a herd of cattle
an exaltation of larks
a murder of crows
a clutter of cats
a pride of lions

But wait, you may not know the correct collective noun or one may not exist. Creating a collective noun of your own is highly encouraged, for example:

a leak of plumbers
a tinkle of crystal
a failing of students
a lurch of busses
a belch of smokestacks
a piddle of puppies
a petal of roses

So, the subject matter is wide open. Your photo must contain multiples of the primary subject and you must title your photo with a collective noun (either real or imagined). The idea is to have fun with your photos and titles. I hope that voters will grant extra consideration to highly creative collective noun titles.

Here are several web sites which might help you along in the task:

Challenge Starts: Friday 17th June 2005 0:00 UTC

Challenge Ends: Tuesday 28th June 2005 23:59 UTC

Voting Begins: Wednesday 29th June 2005 0:00 UTC

Voting Ends: Thursday 30thJune 2005 23:59 UTC

  • There are no limits on image post-processing. Edit to your tastes and the voters will decide if it’s too much.

  • To have your image(s) come across the way you’ve intended - on multiple monitors, browsers and operating systems - make sure it is in the sRGB color-space and please embed the color profile when saving.

  • There is no limit on pixel dimensions, but viewers are more likely to appreciate your work at its original size without the use of scroll bars. So - unless your photograph has a very untraditional aspect ratio - keeping the longest side of the image at 800 pixels or less is strongly recommended.

  • Please size your images to 150kb or less. The size of the file once it is uploaded to PBase is the size that counts. PBase reports the size in the rightmost column on the ”edit this gallery”-page. 150kb = 150x1024 bytes = 153600 bytes. To save you the trouble of recompressing, I have found that aiming at around 140kb in Photoshop, usually will keep the file size under the allowed 153600 bytes once it is uploaded to PBase.

  • To preserve the EXIF-information, it is recommended to use the ”Save As”-command instead of ”Save for Web”. When updating an image in-place, PBase will retain the original EXIF and therefore using ”Save for Web” can be used in that circumstance.

  • PASSWORD: To obtain the PBase password for these galleries, please email the passholders at:

  • Please ensure each image includes your name and a unique title. For eligible entries, the date on which it was taken and the camera model must also be shown. Exif-information is not a must, but always appreciated. Also, feel free to share your shot set-up, post-processing details, and the like with your fellow photographers.

  • Those who prefer more plainspoken and critical comments on their images should mark their title(s) with an asterisk ( ).

  • Please respect one another’s work. Do not delete, move, or otherwise edit other entries. Please respect the first-come, first-serve sequence of the gallery. You may update your images in-place, provided that the subject matter and general treatment have not materially changed (PBase supports this function on the “Edit Image” page).

  • Image by image, please share your comments with your fellow photographers. Challenges reach their full potential when the dialogue becomes as important as the images themselves. You have to be logged in, in order to leave and read comments.

  • By clicking on ”profile” at a gallery page and then on ”View Your Forum” (you have to be logged in for this to show) at the Profile page that appears, you will get to the PBase-forum for Canon DSLR-challenge. This is a great way to follow new comments on any and all images in the galleries.

  • If you are the first to comment on an image, I kindly ask you to type (or copy paste) the title of the photograph into the subject-field of the commenting page. This will default the subject field of all subsequent comments to the title of the photograph and will make the PBase-forum so much more informative and legible.
