Most strobes are equipped with a modeling light, which is simply an incandescent or daylight-balanced fluorescent bulb that is designed to provide an idea of the strobe output and how the light will fall over the subject. Some strobe models feature modeling lights that track according to the variable output of their strobe unit, so the desired effect of a certain ratio of lights can be readily determined.

Overall, I wanted a very soft look for this shot. The softboxes for the keylight and hair light both work toward this goal. The use of the reflector further helps spread the light, and effectively broadening the keylight source.

The hair light acts to provide a little more detail to the frame, namely the upper left corner, and pick up more texture in the hair. This additional and minor emphasis on hair helps emphasize a play between the rich texture surrounding the face with the starkly smooth skin of the model.
