Canon 580 Flash Battery Door Is Weird

I just got a new Canon 580 flash, and I'm wondering what's up with the door on the battery compartment. It doesn't seem to open all the way, and then it seems like the excessive force required could break the hinge. Also, it's a very long door with a single hinge on the long side that is very small and at one end, so it sort of flops around once it is open. I've never seen anything like it, so I'm wondering if this is normal or defective. Maybe it's Canon's reply to complaints about batteries falling out of the 550 flash when the door accidentally opens too easily, but it seems very strange. Otherwise feels very solidly built with good simple controls, nicely readable display and excellent results.
