First post. When I knew I would be buying a car, I lurked for three years on the Edmunds auto web site. It didn't take long to learn that the Subaru owners were exceptionally intelligent, friendly and helpful. Whereas posters in other car forums were constantly arguing and playing ego games, the Subaru gang was consistently cooperative and affirmative. Even before I fully understood the virtues of Subarus, I was attracted to the people who owned them. I was proud to join them on the forum and by buying a used Outback.

It has happened again. I've been lurking here for months, checking out different digital photography forums. This Olympus forum is remarkable in just the same way my old Subaru site was. You folks are conspicuously informative and friendly. I love the images you have posted here, but the spirit of sharing and personal support is even more remarkable. You are my kind of people.

This afternoon or tomorrow, I'll receive shipment of an 8080. In a few months, I might be able to post an image. I know I'm going to be spending a lot of time here listening to you as I trudge up the steep slope of the learning curve. Thanks in advance for the support I know you will offer. You guys are great.

Welcome aboard Storyteller. Somehow Olympus people have a way of finding "their own kind" :o)

You might like to take direct your attention to:

http://www.pbase.com/otfchallenge/root

By now you will have heard/read all the literature out there extolling the virtues of the 8080. After a few days, if not hours, you will wonder how you ever managed without one! ;-)

Look forward to your contributions on the forum. All the best.

I like this name. It looks that your pictures will tell the stories too, hehehe…

Welcome to the forum. I have to agree with you, this is the best forum with supportive, friendly, funny and the best people in the world. I’m sure you’ll feel like at home.

There is one very bad thing about this forum: it is very addictive. And the worst part is there is no known cure for that. Even if people change the camera brand, they can’t leave. So, don’t say I didn’t warn you :)

Congrats on your purchase. 8080 is something special. I’ll suggest you to go through recent posts (you can search) and look for advices that the recent new owners got here. It could be very helpful.

Also, waiting a few months for your first pictures is out of the question. Not acceptable!!! :) The reason I’m saying this is because after the few hours you’ll be able to make pictures. Week later, you’ll be ready to post pictures here. By posting, you’ll get suggestions on how to improve your pictures (if necessary). That is the best way to learn.

Enjoy in your new toy and have fun. Come back here often…

Cheers,
Alex.

Welcome to a great forum! And lots of fun with your new camera!

But I don´t think it will take you a few months until you post your first shots; digital photography is an addictive fun game and I am sure we will see some good shots much sooner!

Came here the same way as you did, lurking for several months and then about a year ago I got my first used ebay UZI. Meanwhile there are 3 UZIs plus TCONs and MCONs and hopefully a WCON within the next days.
But no Subaru so far, lol, just an old Mazda, reliable and affordable.

we only roll out the red carpet after you have posted a picture and might even throw in a chaser.

Your profile states you are not new to photography so this will just be a piece of cake. Digital has added years to this old codger and I expect you will find the same addiction that so many of us have.

Looking forward to your pictures.

'Photography is the art of seeing what others do not.'

Thanks gang! Gee, I feel I know some of you already, having admired your photos and smiled at the way you have shared tips.

Tough deadline, CC! I'm still charging up the battery!

As an incidental observation, I've been surprised at the low profile of Oly in the "most popular camera" by clicks thing. But just go to POTD sites, and Oly shots are just a tiny bit behind Canon and Nikon. That seems to me to say Oly fans are good photographers.

Thanks for the welcome.

If there's is one point I must argue & I'd be adamant about...

It's that totally unacceptable month or more that you profess to have to wait to post a pic for us to see....
Sheesh!
Give us a break....
Please!?

Put the damn thing in 'P' on a sunny day And fire away on some of your favorite hangouts, subjects or whatever....
Christ! Even from behind the wheel on the way to or from work...

There'll be plenty of time to get deep into specifics but that isn't so neccessarry for us.. OOps sorry... Me.......

Hi there Storyteller,

Welcome to the forum! As someone who used to A) live in MN (Burnsville), B) own a Subaru ('95 Imprezza), and C) own Olys (5050, C750, 8080), I have to say that I like you already.

Enjoy your new 8080. It is a fine camera and capable of making fantastic images.

Incidentally, as a Subaru person, you may enjoy looking at this. My younger brother is a WRX fanatic, and has one of the nicest ones I've seen. This is no longer current, but it was still kind of nice even then:

Again, welcome to the Forum, and congrats!

Hi and welcome to the Oly forum.

Yes, there are loads of friendly folk here and they're all eager to lend a hand getting the best from anyone's camera - not just Oly! LOL!

Talking of which - "Oly fans are good photographers" is true in most cases, but with such good cameras (Oly, of course) how can anyone go wrong?
:-)

Cheers,
Dave.

....it took me 4 years to finally post here!! And once I did it is great fun! Like Alekko said though, it is addicting!! Thats for sure....so welcome to the neighborhood and look forward to seeing your shots!

To just buy an STI? :-)
