Ultra-Compact with RAW?

I know this has been asked before (because I searched) but I thought I'd ask again in case anything has changed recently. Are there really no Ultra-Compacts that support RAW? I'm posting in the Canon forum because I'd prefer a Canon solution, but at this point I'm open to a camera from nearly any company. I'll be going on vacation in a month and of course I'll bring my SLR, but I'd love something small to keep on me at all times. Does such a thing truly not exist? If there are aren't any "Ultra" compacts are there some cameras that are really close?

And yes, I do realize that many of these cameras have fine in-camera processing. But that still doesn't stop me from wanting the luxory of RAW. Any suggestions would be very welcomed.

I agree!

But I am not too sure if RAW under any brand will be a luxury or a pain.

What I am sure of is that there should be user installed flash updates to tweak a camera so it gives RAW output

The more I think about it the more convinced I am that there should be such a feature.

One reason?

It allows people to play with RAW on less expensive kit rather than taking what may be a particularly expensive bit of kit outdoors.

It seems to me that digital imaging is a very tactile thing - it needs hands on experience. Anything to facilitate tactile learning has got to be good.

C'mon Canon - if anyone can, Canon can!

Thanks for the suggestions. But, both the P600 and 700 are a little big to be truly pocketable. Anyone else?

There are no smaller Canon cameras that offer RAW;try Fuji cameras;and, see the Buying Guide:

P.S., I'm terrible at proof reading my posts for spelling errors,so I use ieSpell with Internet Explorer and SpellBound with Firefox(both are free).Once installed, I just Right-click on my message here and select Check Spelling.

Thanks for the info! The Z50 or Z750 may be nearly perfect. I hadn't realized that you could enable RAW on Casio's cameras. I need to investigate software to read the RAW files, but it looks like we may have a winner. Thanks again.

So fat chance of RAW!.. to be honest, only the S400 & 410 (the S500 at a push) would benefit from RAW as the rest are too noisy and the in-camera processing does a better job on the tiny 4 & 5Mp 1:2.5 / 1:2.7" and 7Mp 1:1/8 CCDs than a RAW converter can do..

What these cameras need more than anything is fully variable aperture and an accompanying AV mode so you can stop the camera down to F4 at the wide end to combat soft corners S45/S50/S60/S70 style.. as they are, they're running wide open most of the time :(

I’m not sure about that. The smaller the sensor the less dynamic range you get and the possibility to correct the exposure in RAW would be great.

I hope that some nice software engineers say something along the lines of:

"Hey! You want RAW from a consumer spec kit? Flash this..."

Prefereably from the cameras brand though :)

The main problem whit the RAW is the file size. It requires much faster processor and a bigger internal memory. P700 makes 4mb Jpegs if you use maximum size (7mp), but the RAW file is over 10mb. So if you take 5 pictures in high speed mode using jpeg, the camera has to manage 20mb in a short time. Whit RAW the size is 50mb.

Meaby the camera makers have decided to leave the RAW, because they mite just get bad reviews about it and the speed of it. I think that CASIO has found a good midleground decision for this, to leave the RAW mode hidden but accessable. This way no one can really say anything about the speed, because this function is only for service use. But users can still use it if they decide to...

They have both the lens and the technology in the S70 - their lack of AV mode and variable apertures I feel is sheer stubbornness much the same as not putting spot metering in anything lower than a 1-series DSLR or offering a D70-Style de-crippling Firmware update for 300D owners DESPITE the D50 on the horizon.

All I want is the S70 in the S400 form factor. Quickly and easily done...
