I put scotch tape on my CCD...balls of steel

Thanks alot for taking the time to reply Rebelo, your comment is really helpful! I've learned alot!

..........that told 'em

Dragons slain, trolls hung, drawn & quartered, (this is a completely free public service), witches burnt at the stake, serfs freed, maidens rescued, crusades fought, moats dug, sieges mounted, armour de-rusted, swords sharpened, boils lanced, teeth pulled, night soil collected, scolds bridled, outlaws hunted, virgins deflowered - call for free estimate

but he was quoting either George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, or
possibly even Bertrand Russell.

I recommend some scotch, not the tape though. A single malt would
be nice. I have some Glenfiddich but you're on the wrong side of
the pond for a friendly drink. You are, however, closer to the
source. Nighty night.

If it hasn't already been done, I think it's worth pointing out that none of the methods described (blower, brush, or tape) ever touch the sensor. Yes, the sensor is a sensitive piece of equipment, yes the filters are overlayed on the photosites very exactly and would probably easily be messed up if brought in contact with something else. Still, to my knowledge, every camera over $100 in the last 5 years has had a hot filter to block IR mounted in front of the sensor. Some have them permanently affixed while some have them mounted to the internal structure like the D70 (which is how you can mod it to be IR, by removing the filter and replacing it).

The worst any of these methods could do is mangle the hot filter, which could be removed and (feasibly) replaced in the case of the D70. Good luck hitting Nikon up for one though.

It's an interesting idea, but I don't think I'd be doing to mine any time soon. Maybe worth having a chat with my friends in surface physics on exactly what's in that residue and what kind of interaction could be going on with the interface with the glass.

Yes, the methanol would destroy our vision and then the dust bunnies would have gone away permanently ;-)
