First bird pics with Sigma 300-800 DG

Amen to that, Sugar...

... but then Daniella's exemplary talent as a photographer (I look in awe at her bird images) would certainly qualify her to come out with that opinion, even if she has no personal experience with the said lenses, and against the opinion of one who has used both....;-)

Why? The 500 mm is a very complicated design with IS on top of it.
The 300-800 mm is a zoom and has a very limited zoom range (less
than factor 3).
I think that the 500 mm does not blow away the 300-800. I have seen
several photographers using both stating that performance is about
equal, people who are contesting those comparisons are using a
fundamentalist rethoric saying that primes are better than zooms,
although they never compared the actual performance themselves
