Hi all

I'm in the process of getting quotes.... which cable release can be used or is recommended for the 7D?

The guy listed two -

RC-1000L Remote Cord $88.26inc (aussie)
RC-1000S Remote Cord $99.66 inc. (aussie)

He said the only difference was the length - the L being for Long and the S being for Short... which doesn't make sense that the longer one be cheaper.

Thanks in advance!

So I'll get the 50cm one.... I didn't realise they were the lengths ! I'm buying loads of stuff at once, so hopefully theres some movement on the final price.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I have the long one for more than one year but honestly I never took advantage of the long wire. And the long version does take more space in the bag.
So, i think the short one will be enough for most if not all situations

I think you can better spent 15% extra money and get 1000% extra length.

I actually have both. I bought the shorter one first and then decided I wanted the longer length. Most frequently I use the longer one for taking pictures of birds. I set the camera outside on our deck and run the cord in the house. The birds don't seem to mind the camera and ignore me if I'm behind glass. I've also used it to include myself in a photo. Much less rushed than using the self timer.

I have both.

The long one for studio type shooting where I have time to prepare using a tripod and the short one attached to the camera all other times for photo-reporting.

If you do a lot of tripod shooting get the long one.

If you do lots of hand held shooting (e.g. flash bracket) then get the short one.

This is a good item to get on Ebay because it is very sturdy and you are unlikely to end up buying a defective one (unlike lenses). The go for about USD $25.

Hope that helps,

JL

Have glass, will travel.

I'd have thought otherwise... but I guess with the scenarios mentioned earlier it would come in handy.

Ideally I'd like about a 1.5m cable... are there any other cables that are available? or are they the only two for the 7D?

Hi Simon:

You could get the long one and cut out a center section and put male and female 3.5mm stereo headphone connectors (or any 3 conductor connectror) on each end. You would have a customizeable cable short enough to carry in your bag and one for extra length when you needed it.

Also, the release configuration is simple enough for you to make your own remote, just do a search here and in the general Minolta forum for plans.

The minolta remote is nice though, but I have a hard time with what they charge for them.

I thought about doing that ! I had the long cable, which can come in handy (I have a great shot of a bluebird taken by prefocussing & then waiting at the end of the long cable release) but it's a nuisance when you're shooting close by the camera. I ended up with both cables, picking up the short one used for around US$25 or so. I just had to wait a while for a good deal :)

You can always keep the 5 m cord tied together, to 50 cm, and if you ever need the extra 4.5 m, you can always untie it, and with the short cable? Oopsie...
