Re: Cold, hard reality sets in...
Hi yourself;
There isn't one negative that was mentioned that will impact me materially. I shoot 120 rollfilm a lot, takes about 2 minutes to change a roll after 10 shots - taking 1 minute to change batteries after 100 shots is a walk in the park. WHO THE HELL TAKES 100 SHOTS AT A TIME? There must be a lot of frustrated Sports Illustrated Wannabee's out there! I compose my shots, I use a tripod more often than not, I'll use a spotmeter to check exposure and range - I don't machinegun. I have a Casio 3000EX now and am not unduly bothered by noise or battery life, I expect that I'll be fully satisfied with the Minolta. You wanna talk noise? You should have been around to use Kodak Kodacolor-X in 35mm! There are no "small" problems, either they matter or they don't - I have yet to find a negative comment about this camera that means anything to me. As for the current crop of 35mm cameras - if I had a Canon system I would buy a D30, but I don't. I've been shooting Nikon for 20 years, and I do not consider the D1X to be worth $5500.00 of my money. Neither is the Fuji S1 built on the crap N60 body a contender. Nor do I consider even the D30 to be worthy of investment in a whole new system. I'll wait a year or so for the next generation, and if I need to switch systems I will gladly do so. Besides, I'll be able to write-off my purchases on next year's taxes (between computers, printers and scanners I'm probably going to max-out on write-offs this year anyway). I really want an EVF viewfinder - the "mirror in a box" is so old tech it's ridiculous. I'll be hoping for a larger sensor also, so I can better control depth of field and get better wideangle coverage. The "professional" SLR's just aren't where I want them to be yet. And one other point: "If people notice the noise in your photo, they're not looking at the picture". You can quote me on that.

Hi
I'm not here to judge your decisions, but to give my 2 cents worth...
I love my G1, but I'm getting a bit tired of dealing with its
little problems. Like you, I wanted an SLR, which is why I sold off
my G1 to get a D30. Never regretted it. It's a whole new world from
prosumer cameras. Did it break my bank? it did, but it's still
worth it!
I do not know what you find objectionable about the current crop of
digital SLRs, but the price for a D30 has gone down, coupled with
lots of rebates and offers.
Getting a D7 will ensure that you once again have to put up with
those "little problems" that plague all consumer cameras. In this
case, these problems seems to be magnified and numerous with the D7!
One example - battery life. You may think that you can live with
the short battery life, but give it a few weeks, and you'll find it
unbearable. I thought my G1 had impressive battery life too, until
I got the D30! My, I'm amazed at how many shots I can already
squeeze out of it, even without the optional battery pack! And the
noiseless images simply made me wonder how much I've missed out
on.......
Anyway, hope you will make a decision that you will be happy with
