Hello. Now that I am about to receive my CP 995, I will want to purchase some accesories for it, most notably a carrying case and extra battery.

Can anyone recommend the "must-have" accesories and a good place (i.e., cheap) to get them?

I am confused about the batteries. Which is the right type to purchase?

Thanks as always!

I saw posted here a while back a reference to http://www.dealcat.com that seemed to have great prices on all sorts of accessories. I haven't yet used them - you might want to check them out on http://www.resellerratings.com .

Battery needed is EL-EN1, the Nikon rechargeable - you get one plus the recharger in the box. I bought an extra when I bought the camera. $35+ - is a good price. Also an alkaline 2CR5, at any camera store is a good idea for a "just in case" standby.

Carrying case - Nikon have a couple, but I'd suggest a non-Nikon brand - that Nikon name all over the bag just shouts "steal me"...!

Consider the great wideangle and telephoto lenses, also remote cords which also act as intervalometers are fun to use. Poke around this forum and you will see url's to all sorts of places with interesting tips, techniques, addons and other wonderful/crazy stuff.

Have a ball, I know I do.

I would suggest a wide angle lens if you plan to take lots of scenary photos. I ordered one with my camera just today......can't wait to use it to shoot NYC.
extra battery, a tripod, maybe UV filter would also be gerat to have..

Extra batteries and lots of memory cards is always good.

I'd also suggest an external flash if you plan on taking photo's indoors. And my favorite, the TC-E2 teleconverter!

Look at the diffrence:

Not the most exciting example, but you get the idea! :-D

Happy shooting!

Hi Les,

I'm also in the process of accessorizing my 995. This is my first "real" camera, digital or film, so I'm starting from scratch. Here are the things I've ordered so far:
  • Viking 128MB CF card. $60 after rebate and coupon from Amazon.
  • Hakuba hand strap. This strap was just what I was looking for and was about $4 from B&H.

  • Lowepro D-Res 25 case. I saw the D-Res 20 in a local shop but it looked a tad too small. The 25 is supposed to fit the 990 nicely so I hope it'll work for the slightly thicker 995.
  • Kenko 28mm UV filter. I had a scary moment when my thumb slipped off of my lens cap when pinching it to remove it and it went flying out of my fingers and into the 995's outer lens surface. I didn't think I had damaged the surface permanently but after very careful inspection it looks like it did leave a very faint mark on the coating. Not the end of the world but still a pretty big bummer. A $10 coated UV filter would have prevented that.
  • Zio CF card reader. About $30.
I already had a spare EN-EL1 Li-Ion battery that I bought for use with a defective Nikon 880 I had returned last month. I found this one at ecost.com for about $35-40. buy.com also carries this battery for a great price but they always seem to be out of stock. I went store-hopping yesterday and http://www.precision-camera.com here in Austin, TX had about a dozen of these in a display case. (I'm not affiliated with them, just passing along info of a vendor who I know has this item in stock).

Don't forget some cleaning accessories. I'm still looking but for now I'm using a can of compressed air (from a distance) and a micro-fiber lens cloth.

I got most of my accessories from B&H Photo. I ordered late last night and my order shipped this morning. They have a great inventory and very good rating on resellerratings.com.

Shop carefully and you'll find some great deals out there. I got my 995, 128MB CF card, extra battery, hand strap, card reader, UV filter, and case for about $885 - shipping/taxes included and after all rebates/coupons redeemed.

Les,

When you get ready to purchase any lense filters or accessory lenses, check out the The Lense Connection for good prices & selection:

Here is what I have (for my 990) and what I feel about them:
1. Nikon Coolpack, which includes many items:

1-1. UV filter - I think this is a must have. The first thing I did when I got my camera is too put the uv filter on, and stay on.
1-2. PL filter - very useful, can improve color in day light. I use it a lot.
1-3. ND4 and ND8 filter - never use.

1-4. Nikon bag - looks cool but never use. In fact, if someone need it, I want to sell.
1-5. Rechargable battery and charger - useful

2. Mini tripod - (only $4+) VERY useful in indoor use.

3. LensPen - use it once a while.

4. WC-E63 with UV and PL filter - relatively useful. I haven't had any major trip yet. I think I will really put it in use in Alaska later this month. Never need it in indoor or city situation, yet.

5. TC-E2 with UV and PL filter - quite useful in city and zoo, but still feel not "close" enough. If you search for TC-E2 in this forum, you will find many good alternatives.

6. iNova's eBook - very useful. One of the must have.

7. Nikon camera case - somewhat useful.

8. Lexar 128 CF - you may get much better price for other brand, but for sure need a 128M CF, which safe for one day shooting.

Enjoy!

I consider a good flash bracket an essential and have the Rollbar ( http://www.therollbar.com ). The onboard flash on the 995 has done a lot to eliminate red-eye but it is pretty weak for most shots. So an auxiliary flash is really needed for the best shots. HTH. PatiO.

1 more thing which I forgot to mentioned one must own.

LENSPEN. for $10-$15, it's a must have

Some travel tips;
1. keep your camera/bag with you at all times. Never leave it in a car/trunk.

2.If your in an airport, watch it and people around the check-in xray machine when you go through the metal detectors.

3. If you have to set your bags down, keep them in front of you, and if you can, with a hand resting on or touching your bag, foot touching bags on the ground.

4. Be alert for distraction maneuvers often employed by thieves working in teams.
Please add to these if you think of more.

I knew a guy who replaced his stolen camera bag/equipment with a diaper bag to throw off thieves.

Thanks everyone! What a great bunch of advice!

In retrospect, I asked a rather open-ended question. In light of my intended use and level of experience (mostly wide-angle mountain shots and Alaskan Malamutes; non-novice but definitely not pro), I have decided that I need these:

Extra battery
Extra memory (got that $60 128 MB deal, thanks!)
UV filter (for lens protection as well as UV filtering for outdoor shots)
Carrying Case
Wrist strap
Wide-angle Lens

Now that my credit card has taken such a hit, I'll have to wait a while before getting the rest of my needs ;-)

I really appreciate the help. This is an awesome forum. Took my first pictures on the CP 995 (from Dell) yesterday and am poring throug the manual today. For new users: READ THE MANUAL. You can't efficiently "figure it out yourself." Also: When you can't close the memory door, fold over the Eject button first!

Cheers,

Les
