i have read so much info re capture2 vs bibble/qimage pro and the value of the NEF. what would happen if i just use the free plug in and open the nef in photoshop (the most powerful image editor on the planet?) and do my work there...if i need more pixels, i can use genuine fractals. what would i miss. i know i would have to convert to 8 bit to have all the capabilites of PS6 available to me.

pros/cons please!!!

BTW- i have a D1X/G4 mac, i output to epson 1270, print usually under 8.5 x 11...occasionally larger. so in editing i need to
1) color correct/digitally edit
2) enough pixels to support my print size
3) thats all

Dave, have you stopped by to see the comparison images from each of the conversion tools? Check the front page of http://digital-images.net

You can answer your own question.

Primarily, the difference is how much control you have over the image before conversion to 8 bit, at which point you lose dynamic range and color-gradient detail.

You can batch-process for selection using the NEF plugin, but it's really very, very slow. You can work one image at a time for tweaking, but besides being slow it's also somewhat limited in what you can do before conversion to 8 bit. With all that said, it does do a pretty decent job.
