I have essentially never used any Photoshop editor (except for a little bit of PSE 2.0).

I have been doing my image editing with Picture Publisher 8 (formerly a product of Micrografx, now handled by Corel). It is very capable, and has a nice user interface (once you get used to it!). It has a lot of features I have never used.

I shoot mostly with a Canon EOS 30D (and, in an hour or so, I hope, an EOS 20D).

So far most of my editing has been just cropping, adjustment of contrast and brightness, application of USM, cloning out of unintended elements, and some bush league addition of elements, change of body shape, and so forth.

I'm of course intrigued by the Adobe offer of PS CS for $299.00.

I'd be glad to hear any observations from PS CS users here regarding that application.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Doug

Take a good look at Corel's CorelDraw suite. It is the best, IMHO, and I have used both. They have a TBYB (try before you by) for 30 days.

PS CS is without a doubt the best software around. That being said it has a fairly steep learning curve. If you are willing to spend the hours learning PSCS you will find that it can do anything you want and you will become addicted. However, if you are not interested in spending time learning the product and basically just want to shoot photos with a little manipulation like you have been doing (and you are satisfied with the results) continue using Picture Publisher 8 or if you want switch to Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro which have easier learning curves.

If you intend to get more into post processing you can not under estimate the HUGE user base and tutorials already written for Photoshop.. Not to mention actions and plugins already written for PS. If you get different software it will be more difficult to find help.. This forum alone will answer pratically any question about PS that you have and more. Not to mention photoshop can almost be considered a definite to exist the future decades (Files will not become obsolete.)

On the otherhand if you do not want to learn and get more advanced than you can probably can any software that has sufficient capabilities...

My opinion is go for it.. I could not live without the advanced features like masking, actions, scripting, batch processing actions, etc, etc. I also love learning advanced techniques and pushing the software to the limit.. Others love simplicity.

Unless you are really strapped for money it is a good investmetn.. What are your future plans as far as post processing???

Now I may be a bit biast, but I've been using Photoshop since version 4, and I wouldn't change it for the world. Photoshop is my favorite image editing program, I have yet to find something it can't do that I would expect it to be able to do. Photoshop is worth every penny and then some.

I'm inclined to agree with those who say go with PS. The question to ask yourself is where you plan to go with your photography. If you're satisfied with snapshots to share with family and friends and never envision yourself wanting more, then CS is probably overkill. On the other hand, if you'd like to advance your photography (or can envision that day), then you'll regret not having PS. And since you're upgrading from a 300D to a 20D, I suspect you fall into the later category.

I downloaded the 30-day trial of CS and fell in love. It has so many features that could be used to save a special photo. I just ordered the $299 upgrade myself. Better hurry, the offer ends Feb 28.
